Technologies, Training, and Techniques for Safer Intravenous Systemic Anti-cancer Therapies for Clinicians in Cancer: Protocol for a Scoping Review
ABSTRACT
Background:
Healthcare professionals preparing and administering IV SACT face occupational exposure risks. Unlike pharmacy environments, administration occurs in busy clinical areas and adherence to safety guidelines is inconsistent.
Objective:
This scoping review aims to identify, map and describe the existing evidence on the technologies, training, and techniques designed to protect clinicians during intravenous systemic anti-cancer therapy (IV SACT) administration and identify knowledge gaps in the current literature.
Methods:
Eligibility Criteria: Eligible studies will involve nurses, pharmacists, or clinicians preparing or administering IV SACT with a focus on reducing occupational exposure. Strategies may include technologies (e.g., closed system transfer devices), training (e.g., simulation), or techniques (e.g., aseptic protocols). Only English-language studies published from 2018 onwards will be included. Following JBI methodology, searches will be conducted in CINAHL, Embase, Scopus, MEDLINE and Google Scholar. Study selection and data extraction will be completed independently by two reviewers, and findings will be synthesised using the PAGER framework.
Results:
This scoping review search strategy development commenced in December 2025. It is planned to be completed by 30 September 2026
Conclusions:
This review will directly inform clinical nursing practice and training frameworks by identifying effective strategies to support safer IV SACT administration, while also highlighting priorities for future research. Clinical Trial: Registration on OSF: DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/XG2VY
