ABSTRACT

Widespread implementation of ambient artificial intelligence (AI) scribe technologies in the United States and globally continues to outpace available evidence on learning and cognition in medical education and practice. We explore the often-ignored consequences of ambient AI scribe use within clinical practice and medical training, such as cognitive offloading. We also introduce the concept of four fundamental purposes of the clinical chart note based on the long history of medical documentation as a framework for clinical teaching, mitigation of administrative burdens and evaluation of AI Scribe development and use.
