Purpose and Wisdom in Mental Health Among Adults: A Multi-Analytical Approach
ABSTRACT
We investigated life purpose and wisdom in relation to mental health among 377 adults and older adults (from 50- to 102-year-old). We employed a multi-analytical strategy with covariance-based structural equation modeling and artificial neural networking. We found that meaning/purpose in life, wisdom, and quality of life were significantly predicted mental health/well-being. Exogenous variables accounted for 71% of the explained variance in the endogenous variable. Artificial network analysis yielded exact forecasts of mental well-being. The model achieved significant accuracy: 82.1% and 73% on the training and test sets, respectively, for predicting mental well-being. Sensitivity analysis revealed that meaning and purpose were the most critical factors in explaining participants’ mental well-being. These findings have prominent theoretical implications for social psychology researchers and practical consequences for authorities involved in the care of older adults, who can use the results to develop strategic plans and take necessary actions.
