ABSTRACT
Background:
Highlights
● Mixed methods protocol to evaluate school health policies and practices in Brazil and Portugal.
● Describes the application of the G-SHPPS in Brazil and Portugal.
● Involves multiple stakeholders: school administrators, nurses, and adolescents as study participants.
● Incorporates Photovoice as a participatory strategy to amplify adolescents’ voices.
● Provides evidence to strengthen intersectoral public policies and to promote safer and healthier school environments.
Objective:
Objective:
To describe the protocol of a mixed-methods study evaluating and comparing school health policies and practices in Brazil and Portugal.
Methods:
Method: An explanatory sequential design (QUAN → qual → [qual] → [qual]) will be used. The quantitative phase (Phase I) involves a cross-sectional study with school administrators using the Global School Health Policies and Practices Survey. The qualitative phases include semi-structured interviews with principals or headteachers (Phase II), with school nurses (Phase III), and participatory research with adolescents through the Photovoice technique (Phase IV). The study will be carried out in elementary and secondary schools and related health services in selected Brazilian and Portuguese cities. Data integration will occur through sequential analysis and joint display, combining quantitative and qualitative findings.
Ethics and dissemination: Approved by a Research Ethics Committee, results will be disseminated through theses, dissertations, and peer-reviewed journals.
Results:
The results will guide managers and professionals, deepen the understanding of adolescents’ needs, and generate guidelines and materials that strengthen health-promoting schools aligned with World Health Organization standards.
Conclusions:
Conclusion: Findings will strengthen intersectoral actions and support health-promoting schools.
