ABSTRACT

Exclusive breastfeeding is the healthiest and most sustainable form of infant feeding. It is vital to increase breastfeeding rates and achieve balanced and sustainable maternal nutrition in order to achieve this. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational and counseling intervention on breastfeeding and healthy maternal nutrition from an environmental perspective. Multi-center prospective study of intervention in two cohorts in primary care centers and hospitals of the North Metropolitan area of Barcelona. An experimental group, which will receive an educational intervention and healthcare support on breastfeeding and healthy and sustainable maternal nutrition. A control group, which will receive usual care. A Guide to good practices in breastfeeding and healthy and sustainable nutrition will be created. Professionals will be trained specifically. Informative material, specific prenatal education, and specialized care will be designed, and spaces will be adapted for breastfeeding care. Pregnant women will be monitored from 24 weeks to 6 months postpartum. The rates of different types of breastfeeding, the mother's diet and the associated environmental impacts (climate change and water footprint) will be analyzed. An increase in the incidence and prevalence rates of breastfeeding and a shift towards a healthy diet with low environmental impact is expected. Trial registration: Both phases of the GREEN MOTHER study protocol were registered in ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05729581.
