Understanding the Implementation of Family-centred Care in COVID-19 Isolation Rooms through Paediatric Nurses’ Experiences

ABSTRACT

Background:

The implementation of regulation in child’s care isolation room that emerged during the Corona virus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic affected the practice of family-centered care under enormous pressure. This is a challenge for nurses to implement family-centered care in the isolation rooms to provide the best outcomes for quality of care.

Objective:

This study aimed to explore nurses' experiences in implementing family-centered care in isolation rooms caring for children with COVID-19.

Methods:

A qualitative descriptive design was used by conducting semi-structured interviews with 11 nurses. The inclusion criteria include a minimum of five years of experience treating pediatric patients, caring for a child with COVID-19 in the isolation room for at least two months, having experience in treating pediatric patients with COVID-19 for a maximum of one year ago, and having adequate knowledge regarding family-centered care. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis.

Results:

Three themes were generated including improving psychological well-being, building collaboration, and developing communication strategy. Nurses recognize that communication is the key to being able to apply family-centered care. The strategies of nurses to establish communication with patients and parents influences nurses’ roles to FCC is implemented in the isolation rooms caring for children. Institutional support is needed to develop nurses' communication competence in the implementation of FCC in children isolation care settings.

Conclusions:

The implementation FCC by nurses provides positive result in isolation rooms so it should continue to be implemented even after the pandemic has passed. Clinical Trial: -
