Challenges for a Maternal-Care Health Recommender System in Indonesia: A Formative Pre-implementation Qualitative Study
ABSTRACT
Background:
Maternal evaluation during routine antenatal care (ANC) visits may reduce maternal morbidity and mortality by identifying and addressing issues early on. Health recommender system could help health professionals and pregnant women to monitor daily health parameters and provides recommended actions to support ANC.
Objective:
This study aims to qualitatively analyze challenge in implementation of health recommender system for maternal care in Indonesia as perceived by multiple stakeholders.
Methods:
The methodology used qualitative approach where qualitative data were obtained from the interviews of 37 respondents from multiple stakeholders consisting of 15 health workers and 15 patients from private and government healthcare facilities, four officers from government health offices, two directors of health application vendors, and one manager from a private health clinic. These semi-structured interviews results was analysed using thematic analysis.
Results:
This qualitative study identifies key challenges in implementing a health recommender system for maternal care in Indonesia in People, Process, Infrastructure, and Policy dimension. Six major challenged are revealed mostly regarding skill, accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and standardization. This findings emphasize the value of user involvement in system design to meet healthcare professionals' and patients' needs, technical advancements to foster trust and supporting effective decision-making as well as enhanced data accuracy, reliable and timely service delivery, cost management, and clear regulatory standards.
Conclusions:
This research highlights the importance of involving users in the design and implementation of the system to meet the needs of healthcare professionals and patients. Additionally, technical enhancements to reduce input errors and enhance system reliability are crucial for building trust and supporting effective decision-making. Lastly, adherence to regulatory standards and the establishment of standardized guidelines will be key to achieving broader implementation and ensuring positive impact on maternal care outcomes in Indonesia.
