Gender-Affirming Surgery in Visually Impaired Patients: Navigating Unique Challenges and Considerations
ABSTRACT
Gender-affirming surgery for visually impaired transgender individuals presents unique challenges, including post-operative care adaptations, consent processes, and reliance on non-visual sensory cues for self-perception. Discussions include the dynamics of gender dysphoria in visually impaired individuals, the importance of external validation, and considerations for alternative procedures. Addressing both skeptical and supportive perspectives, the analysis highlights the need for tailored, multidisciplinary care plans to overcome barriers and ensure equitable access. Emphasis is placed on fostering inclusive practices to deliver safe, effective, and affirming surgical care to this underserved population.
