The use of digital technologies (e.g., mobile applications, Zoom, virtual reality, and video games) to promote physical activity in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is increasing. Although it is a new topic, there are no studies using ChatGPT, which has become increasingly popular in recent years, to promote physical activity in individuals with ASD.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility and potential effectiveness of the ChatGPT-delivered physical activity intervention in children with ASD

Methods:

This study was designed to evaluate the feasibility of ChatGPT-delivered physical activities to increase the physical activity level of children with ASD. A feasibility study examines whether an intervention is suitable for further testing (30) and allows the intervention procedure to be used in future studies (21). The feasibility process of the study was based on previous studies that used feasibility measures to evaluate a web-based intervention (21,22,31,32,33,24) and consisted of 5 stages (see Table 1).

Twenty-six families participated in the study (parent and child dyads). Families were assigned randomly to an application group (n: 13) and a control group (n: 13). The intervention consisted of parents in the application group implementing the physical activities recommended by the ChatGPT for their children with ASD. Data were collected via the Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire (LTEQ) and the Feasibility Survey. The findings suggest that ChatGPT-delivered physical activities are worthy of further investigation as an intervention to increase physical activity in children with ASD.

Parents reported that ChatGPT-delivered physical activities are a feasible intervention to increase the physical activity level of their children with ASD and stated that the physical activity content suggested by ChatGPT was interesting and useful. LTEQ measurements also supported parental opinions and showed that the physical activity level of their children with ASD increased significantly after the intervention.
