Rethinking Shade: Florida's Beach Laws and the Risk of UV Exposure
ABSTRACT
Cumulative direct ultraviolet (UV) exposure is known to cause skin-related sun damage and even subsequent skin cancer. However, various methods such as physical sun barriers including shade structures provide substantial protection from such harmful UV rays. With recent ordinances restricting shade structures on particular beaches in Florida, this letter calls attention to the potential harm of allowing such ordinances to increase the risk of UV exposure to beachgoers.
