Current Status and Future Directions of Ferroptosis Research in Breast Cancer: A Bibliometric Analysis
ABSTRACT
Background:
Breast cancer, a prevalent malignancy among females, exhibits a profound association between its pathogenesis and treatment mechanisms with ferroptosis, an emerging mode of regulated cell death.
Objective:
This study aims to comprehensively analyze current ferroptosis research and future trends, guiding breast cancer research advancements and innovative treatment strategies.
Methods:
This research used software such as R package and VOSviewer to conduct a bibliometric analysis of 387 papers on breast cancer and ferroptosis from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC), covering authors, institutions, countries/regions, publication volume, citations, and keywords.
Results:
Publications in ferroptosis surged annually, led by China and the USA. Zhejiang and Sun Yat-sen universities led in output. Author group disparities were minimal, signifying rapid growth. Forecasts had predicted intensified investments by China and the USA, fostering prominent authors and achievements. Frequently cited works concentrated on ferroptosis induction, protein regulation, and comparisons with other modes of cell death, underpinning breast cancer therapies. Keywords highlighted radiotherapy, the maturity of drug systems, and emerging foci on the tumor microenvironment, immunotherapy, and prognostic models. Expression regulation, cell death mechanisms, and the use of nanoparticles in treatment were promising trends.
Conclusions:
The current research status in the field of ferroptosis and breast cancer primarily focuses on the relevant theoretical mechanisms, while the prospective trends and mechanisms emphasize the exploration of therapeutic strategies, including nanotherapy, which has demonstrated significant clinical potential in this domain. Future research directions should further deepen the investigation in this area and accelerate the clinical translation of research findings, promising to offer new insights and directions for advancing the innovation and development of breast cancer treatment strategies.
