Measuring the Difference Between Teaching and Non-Teaching Anesthesia Staff Workload at Al-Noor Specialist Hospital, Makkah, Saudi Arabia
ABSTRACT
Background:
The workload on healthcare workers has increased significantly in recent years. This study evaluates the workload differences between teaching and non-teaching anesthesia staff at Al-Noor Specialist Hospital and examines its impact on performance and vigilance.
Objective:
To determine the difference in workload between teaching and non-teaching anesthesia staff, measure the workload in different anesthesia stages, and understand the effects of workload on performance and patient safety.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study using a Google Forms survey was conducted among anesthesia staff (Anesthesia Technologists, Specialists, and Consultants) at Al-Noor Specialist Hospital, Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
Results:
The workload density was slightly higher during the induction, maintenance, and recovery periods in teaching cases compared to non-teaching cases. The majority of participants strongly agreed that increased workload reduces performance and vigilance during surgery.
Conclusions:
There is only a slight difference in workload between teaching and non-teaching cases, but this small change can significantly affect patient outcomes in anesthesia settings. Further studies are recommended to include more hospitals in Makkah.
