ABSTRACT

Background:

Prevalence of depression among antennal and postnatal women is increasing globally and has been become a serious problem as it significantly affecting maternal health and other people such as husband, family, friends, jobs, and others.

Objective:

Our research objective is to determine the prevalence of depression and its associated risk factors among antennal and postnatal women attending government health clinics in Malaysia.

Methods:

A multi-centered cross-sectional study will be conducted among antenatal and postnatal women attending government health clinics (Klinik Kesihatan) in Malaysia from 1st August 2024 to 1st August 2025. The inclusion criteria for this study are: (i) women aged 18 years old and above and (ii) either pregnant or recently delivered to a newborn or stillborn within 12 months.

Results:

This will be a 2-year study (1st August 2024 to 31st December 2026). We received ethics approvals from the relevant ethics boards prior to data collection. Data will be analyzed using SPSS version 26.0 and we are expected to analyze in August 2025.

Conclusions:

Depression is one of the mental health complications that may arise following childbirth. Therefore, this study will report the prevalence and observe the associated risk contribute to both antenatal and postnatal women. Finding of this study will be useful in decreasing the percentage of depression among women.
