ABSTRACT

Background:

To successfully design, develop, implement, and deliver digital health services that provide value, they should be co-created with patients. However, occasionally value may also be co-destructed. In the field of healthcare, the concepts of value co-creation and co-destruction are not yet well enough established within emerging digital health services. Studying value co-creation and co-destruction in digital health services is essential for developing effective and sustainable patient-centered care.

Objective:

To 1) understand the antecedents, decisions, and outcomes of VCC and VCD in DHS, 2) define the dynamics between VCC and VCD in DHS, and 3) map future research areas of VCC and VCD within DHS.

Methods:

The systematic review will be conducted in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for mixed method systematic review and the PRISMA statement. The searches were conducted to Scopus and MEDLINE during this protocol creation. The searches resulted in a total of 828 articles, which will be screened for the finalized systematic review.

Results:

The antecedents, decisions, and outcomes of value co-creation and co-destruction in the context of digital health services will be described in finalized systematic review. In the outcomes, our main interest is effect on patient outcomes and experiences and professional experiences.

Conclusions:

The review will reveal the current understanding of value co-creation and co-destruction in digital health services and shape the research agenda for these phenomena. Value co-creation can be utilized in both designing as well as efficient use of digital health services trying to maximize the value for the patients.
