ABSTRACT

Background:

Online digital materials are essential for patient education and healthcare outcomes in dermatology. Acanthosis nigricans is a common condition often associated with underlying diseases such as insulin resistance. Patients may search the internet for information related to this cutaneous finding.

Objective:

To our knowledge, there has not been an examination of the quality of online educational materials for acanthosis nigricans. The core objective of this study was to profile the readability and quality of the content of publicly available digital educational materials on acanthosis nigricans and determine questions frequently asked by patients.

Methods:

This study analyzed publicly-available internet sources for the most frequent questions patients search regarding acanthosis nigricans, as generated by the Google Rankbrain Algorithm. Furthermore, available articles on acanthosis nigricans were evaluated for quality and reading level using metrics such as Brief DISCERN score.

Results:

Patients most frequently seek out facts regarding acanthosis nigricans from government sources. Currently available articles do not meet quality standards and are at a reading level not appropriate for the general public.

Conclusions:

Clinicians should be informed of the paucity of valuable online educational sources for acanthosis nigricans.
