ABSTRACT

Objective:

The present article introduces the Nivel Syndromic Surveillance system (NSSS), emphasizing its role in providing “real-time” information on infectious diseases and various health problems at the population level, in the Netherlands.

Methods:

Utilizing data from general practitioners’ (GPs) electronic health records (EHRs), the system allows for the identification of symptom and disease patterns and trends. Besides their use in disease monitoring, surveillance data are applicable in various public health research contexts.

Conclusions:

The NSSS serves as a valuable tool for public health research, offering valuable insights into public health.
