Dynamics of Blood Lipids Before, During, and After Diurnal Fasting in Inactive Men: A Quasi-experimental Study
ABSTRACT
Background:
Ramadan fasting may impact some blood parameters including blood lipids. There is a lack of investigation on the dynamics of blood lipids before, during, and after diurnal fasting, especially in inactive men.
Objective:
the present study aimed to investigate the dynamics of blood lipids before, during, and after diurnal fasting in inactive men.
Methods:
forty-four young men aged (27.6 ±5.8) were recruited to evaluate their habitual physical activity, and diet using a developed questionnaire. Body composition was evaluated using a bioelectrical impedance analysis machine (BIA) (Tanita BC-980). A blood sample of 8 ml was collected to evaluate blood lipids and glucose. All measurements were taken before Ramadan (2-3 days), during Ramadan (week 2 and week 3), and a month later.
Results:
a significant reduction in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) during Ramadan compared to pre and post-Ramadan. although, a significant elevation in fasting blood glucose (FBG) and blood pressure (BP) were reported during and even after the month of Ramadan, both FBG and BP were within normal levels.
Conclusions:
Conclusion: Ramadan fasting could be an independent factor in reducing LDL. Further investigations are encouraged to clarify the impact of diurnal fasting on blood lipids in people with special conditions such as older and obese individuals. Clinical Trial: Not applicable.
