Sign Language Recognition System for Deaf Patients: Protocol for a Systematic Review
ABSTRACT
Background:
Individuals with hearing impairments may face hindrances in healthcare assistance, which may significantly impact the prognosis and the incidence of complications and iatrogenic events. Therefore, the development of automatic communication systems to enable interaction between this population and healthcare workers is paramount.
Objective:
This study aims to systematically review the evidence on the communication systems developed for deaf people, to be used in a healthcare context, and tested with human users.
Methods:
A systematic review, based on a literature search in Medline, Web of Science, Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Xplore as well as top tiered conferences in the area was performed to identify relevant studies. The inclusion criteria were the description of the development of a sign language recognition system in a healthcare context and the testing with human users. Eligible studies will be screened by two independent investigators and disagreements will be solved by a senior researcher. The included papers will undergo full-text screening.
Results:
The systematic review is still in the selection phase of articles of interest.
Conclusions:
This systematic review will identify human machine systems that enable communication in health services involving deaf patients, presenting the framework that includes usability and application in human contexts. We will show a panel of our findings illustrating systems employed to address communication barriers and describe current implementation practices in a narrative comparison.
