ABSTRACT

Background:

Patient perspective in the measurement and evaluation of health outcomes is an important aspect of clinical care. This has been implemented using patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) in clinical practice, clinical trials and clinical quality registries (CQRs).

Objective:

This protocol for a scoping review aims to identify any existing guidelines, frameworks, checklists and/or recommendations for implementing PROMs in these contexts.

Methods:

This review will be conducted in compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocol guidelines. A literature search of the databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycInfo and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials will be conducted since the inception of the databases, in addition to Google Scholar and grey literature to identify for the scoping review. Studies presenting guidelines, frameworks, checklists and/or recommendations on implementing PROMs in any clinical context will be included. Two independent researchers will perform title and abstract screening of all studies and three independent researchers using predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria along with the extraction of data. Any conflict will be resolved through discussion and consensus.

Results:

Database searches were conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, PsychInfo and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases. Title and abstract screening, full-text screening and data extraction are completed. The review is expected to be completed by December 2023.

Conclusions:

The findings from the review will help us develop a guideline to aid the inclusion of PROMs in CQRs. This will ensure successful PROMs tool selection, data collection, analysis and reporting in a clinical registry setting. Clinical Trial: PROSPERO registration: CRD42022366085
