Online learning has transformed education. Its ability to overcome physical barriers and deliver knowledge at the click of a button has made online learning popular and ensured it will continue to be used in the future. The involvement of parents in online learning is fundamental to the success of the educational process, but limited attention has been paid to online learning’s impact on parents.
ABSTRACT
Background:
Online learning have transformed the face of education, its capability to overcome physical barriers and deliver education in a click of a button, made online education more popular and will continue to be utilized. The involvment of parents in the online learning is fundamental to the success of the educational process, yet limited attention have been made to the impact of online learning on parents. Specifically, parents of school aged children, who struggle with their child increased screen time.
Objective:
This study examined parental experiences with school aged children towards online education in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Methods:
The study utilized cross sectional, anonymous online questionnaire to parents of school aged children living in Jeddah city, Saudi Arabia. A total of 184 parents completed the survey.
Results:
Parents negative experience towards online learning exceeds the positive. Most reported negative experiences among parents were child boredom. Whereas the most reported positive experience was child enhancement of technological skills. Lack of social interaction and building friendship promoted stress among parents. On the other hand, positive experiences of enhancement child's technological skills contributed to stress reduction among parents The most obstacles reported by parents towards online learning is having multiple learners in the same household.
Conclusions:
The findings of the study illustrate that parents’ experiences towards online learning were more negative than positive. Parents who reported negative experiences reported an increase in stress and had more obstacles with online learning.
