The efficacy of Web-based Cognitive Behavior Therapy with a shame-specific intervention for social anxiety disorder: Randomized controlled trial
ABSTRACT
Background:
The effectiveness of Internet-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT) for social anxiety disorder is significant and could be maintained for at least four years. However, the inclusion of shame interventions in ICBT has not been extensively researched
Objective:
This study aimed to design and incorporate a shame intervention component in Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder and validate the efficacy of the shame ICBT.
Methods:
A total of 201 participants with social anxiety disorder were randomly assigned to shame group, normal group and waiting group.
Results:
Results revealed that the shame group led to a significant reduction in experienced shame levels compared to normal and waiting group. Both ICBT intervention group showed significant reduction in social anxiety symptoms, with shame group showed a more rapid reduction in social anxiety symptoms.
Conclusions:
These findings highlight the effectiveness of shame ICBT in the treatment of SAD. Further research is needed to explore the long-term effects and cultural variations in its efficacy. Clinical Trial: This study was approved by the local ethics committee and registered in Peking University. The trial registration number is ChiCTR2300072184.
