ABSTRACT

Background:

Patient-centered communication is a key component of patient-centeredness, which is crucial for delivering high-quality care.

Objective:

The study aims to explore the role of patients' electronic health record (EHR) use in facilitating patient-centered communication. Specifically, we investigate how health information efficacy mediates the association of EHR use with patient-centered communication, and whether and how the relationship between EHR use and health information efficacy varies according to patients' social support levels.

Methods:

We conducted mediation and multi-group analyses by using data from the Health Information National Trends Survey 5 Cycle 1 (N = 3,285). Among respondents, we analyzed those who received care from health professionals over the previous year (N = 2,823).

Results:

EHR use was positively related to health information efficacy, which in turn was linked to high levels of patient-centered communication. Also, the association of EHR use with health information efficacy was only detected among patients with little social support.

Conclusions:

Patients who use EHRs may construct health information efficacy, which seems to facilitate communication between patients and health care providers. It appears that patients with low social support benefit more from EHR use when they build health information efficacy.
