ABSTRACT

Background:

Quality of life is supported by the individual's perception in their context of life and culture.

Objective:

This is to describe the demographic, clinical, and quality of life profile of elderly diabetics during the Covid-19 Pandemic in a university hospital complex in the Northern Amazon region.

Methods:

Longitudinal, observational, epidemiological and analytical study with 54 elderly people followed up in the geriatrics outpatient clinic of the university hospital between 2020 and 2022. Were used: a sociodemographic questionnaire, clinical conditions and Diabetes-39. Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality tests and Z-test with 95% confidence interval were employed for analysis.

Results:

Of the 54 interviewees, they were female, married, retired, and had a good quality of life. Of these, 48.1% were infected by Covid-19 and 61.5% evolved to Covid long, presenting Fatigue and/or Muscle weakness. As for the quality of life, the dimensions "Social burden" (p 0.001) and "Sexual functioning" (p 0.001)" remained with low scores compared to the dimensions "Energy/mobility" (p 0.005), "Diabetes control" (p 0.001) and "Anxiety/worry" (p 0.001)". Quality of life was negatively impacted in the "Anxiety and Worry" dimension. Among those affected by Covid-19, most evolved to long Covid, however, there is a lack of data on this theme mainly in diabetic elderly.

Conclusions:

However, these findings contribute to the planning of health programs for the elderly to be prepared for times of pandemic.
