Three-Dimensional Virtual Reconstruction of Shoulder Movement using CT Images: Model Development
ABSTRACT
Background:
Demand for digital reconstructions of the human body is increasing, and reconstruction of the musculoskeletal system is a research area that is necessary to build a human digital twin. Information about the musculoskeletal system structure in anatomical position is well-defined, but information regarding motion is lacking.
Objective:
Here, we aimed to visualize human shoulder movement as a first step towards developing a human digital twin.
Methods:
Computed tomography images of the shoulder were used for three-dimensional modeling of the three bones (scapula, clavicle, and humerus) and nine muscles involved in shoulder movement using the Blender program. The three-dimensional modeled structures were used to develop a visualization application using the Unity engine.
Results:
Three-dimensional modeling of bones and muscles involved in shoulder movements was performed, and the morphological changes in muscles following shoulder movement were animated. A visualization application that can virtually simulate shoulder movement was developed.
Conclusions:
This work provides a basis for the development of a human digital twin that includes digital reconstruction of the musculoskeletal system and movement.
