Digital Cognitive Assessment Tests for Older Adults: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

ABSTRACT

Background:

The global health pandemic has affected the increasing older adults’ population, especially by mental illnesses. Being necessary to early prevent cases of cognitive impairment in adults and requiring the support of ICTs for the evaluation and training of cognitive functions, through computer applications for performing cognitive assessment.

Objective:

The systematic review is carried out to know the state of the art of the current platforms and digital test applications for the cognitive evaluation of people, mainly older adults.

Methods:

A systematic literature search of articles that have been published in three databases (Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus) was carried out, with the aim of analyzing recent articles about applications or digital tests for cognitive assessment; according to the methodology used. Four research questions were considered. Through the PRISMA methodology, after inclusion and exclusion criteria, 20 articles were finally reviewed.

Results:

Some gaps and trends were determined regarding digital applications type and technologies used, evaluated effects and cognitive domains, and the psychometric parameters and personal characteristics considered for validation.

Conclusions:

Computerized tests (similar to paper-and-pencil) and test batteries (on computers, tablets or web platforms) predominate. Also initial studies with simulators, virtual environments, and games of daily-life activity were found. Diversity of validation methods and psychometric properties exist, while a lack of evaluations involving specific populations with diverse education level, culture, degree of technology acceptance exist while considering emotional and usability aspects.
