Mucocutaneous manifestations in Malagasy HIV-infected patients : a cross-sectional study
ABSTRACT
Background:
More than 90% of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients present at least one mucocutaneous manifestation during the course of their disease. No sufficient data was known about dermatologic findings in Malagasy HIV-infected patients.
Objective:
We aim to evaluate the spectrum of mucocutaneous manifestations in HIV-infected Malagasy patients and their relationship with CD4 counts.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study was conducted in HIV positive patients seen in the Infectious diseases Unit of the University Hospital, Antananarivo, Madagascar, from January 2013 to March 2020. HIV positive patients more than 18 years old receiving ART and those awaiting ART commencement were included.
Results:
Among 328 patients enrolled in this study, 51% presented at least one type of mucocutaneous lesions. The most common presentation was oral candidiasis, followed by seborrheic dermatitis and kaposi sarcoma. Oral candidiasis, syphilis and condyloma acuminatum were significantly associated with decrease in CD4 cell counts.
Conclusions:
According to our study, oral candidiasis, syphilis and condyloma acuminatum could be applicable as useful clinical indicators to predict the immune status of the patients. There were more manifestations as the HIV progressed and immune function declined.
