Topical application of tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) on verruca vulgaris - A narrative review of case reports

ABSTRACT

Common warts (verruca vulgaris) are human papilloma viral infection. Most frequently warts appear on the palms and soles, that is painful. Treatment options such as cryotherapy, electrocauterization and excochleation can be painful with recurrences. Tea tree oil is commonly used aroma oil in naturopathy to treat various infectious conditions including verruca vulgaris. We performed a comprehensive literature review in PubMed, EMBASE, and Google scholar to identify articles that reported effect of tea tree oil in patient with verruca vulgaris. We identified four case reports with five patients. These studies suggest that tea tree oil with significant antiviral effect against human papilloma virus. However, in this review included only case reports further randomised controlled studies with large samples required to confirm the findings of this review.
