ABSTRACT

The Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) is a relatively novel metric, which assigns a score to a manuscript based on the attention it has attracted from sources such as news outlets or social media. During the COVID-19 pandemic, social media dissemination of scientific advancements grew drastically. Thus, we sought to analyze trends in AAS patterns of dermatology manuscripts during the COVID-19 pandemic. We assessed every abstracted manuscript (n=747) published in 2021 by top dermatology journals. By multivariable analysis, we found that citation number (P<0.0001), journal impact factor (P=0.003), and whether the article was open access (P<0.0001) or had a declared conflict of interest (P=0.002) was able to predict significantly higher AAS. Despite consisting of only 4% of all manuscripts, studying a topic related to COVID-19 was also significantly related to higher AAS (P<0.0001). Our findings revealed patterns in the dissemination of academic works in the context of a pervasive global pandemic.
