Fake news, covid19 and Twitter – a bibliometric approach
ABSTRACT
Fake News, disinformation and misinformation on health-related topics spread massively. Social media plays a crucial role in their propagation. Among all social media, Twitter was identified as playing the most prominent role, and is also the platform the most investigated by researchers. These issues became even more prevalent since the outbreak of the COVID-19-pandemic. This is also reflected by the global research output. We identified 318 articles published since 2020 in the Web of Science. The total scientific output before the pandemic was only 311 articles, showing the growing interest and productivity in the field. Of all articles on disinformation and twitter since the onset of the pandemic, 38 % were COVID-19-related. A bibliometric analysis was conducted, identifying the most investigated topics, most productive countries, journals and institutions. Thus, an overview about the dynamics and characteristics of this emerging research field was gained.
