ABSTRACT

Background:

Hypertension is known as one of the major causes of premature death worldwide. Therefore, controlling blood pressure becomes essential for reducing the burden of high blood pressure-related disorders.

Objective:

The study aimed to determine the impact of telemonitoring and self-care management mobile application of controlling blood pressure among patients with hypertension in Indonesia.

Methods:

This study was conducted using a queasy experiment. The intervention group received self-management and telemonitoring mobile application. They were followed by both groups for 2 months. Patients eligible for eligibility if they were 35–65 years of age, diagnosed with two or less antihypertensive drugs for hypertension, had a blood pressure of more than 140/90 mmHg. Estimated difference-in-differences (DID) for intention-to-treat (ITT) was used to measure the effect of intervention on outcome overtime.

Results:

A total of 64 patients with hypertension in each group joined in this study. The telemonitoring application and self-management mobile application improved outcomes relative to the control at T1 across four outcomes: 1) systolic blood pressure decreased 2.57 (95% CI (1.32 to 5.52), 2) diastolic blood pressure score saw a modest decreased 2.13 (95% CI (1.57 to 4.68). At T2, improved outcomes relative to the control were observed in systolic blood pressure (DID coefficient 2.57, 95%CI (1.32 to 5.52), diastolic blood pressure (DID coefficient 3.57, 95%CI (1.89 to 6.60).

Conclusions:

The telemonitoring and self-care management mobile application has promising results on controlling blood pressure among patients with hypertension in Indonesia. Healthcare policy may need to integrated application of telemonitoring on self-management intervention and facilitate for future development to help patient’s hypertension could manager their disease and reduce mortality.
