The provision of texture modified foods in long-term care facilities by health professionals: A scoping review protocol
ABSTRACT
Background:
Malnutrition among older adults with dysphagia is frequent. Texture-modified foods are an essential part of dysphagia management. In LTC facilities, health professionals have implemented texture-modified foods, but their application has not been fully elucidated, making them heterogeneous.
Objective:
To explore the implementation of texture-modified foods in long-term care (LTC) facilities, particularly focusing on the role of health professionals in the nutritional care for texture-modified foods (e.g., deciding the type of food, preparing, giving, and evaluating the outcomes). Inclusion criteria: This scoping review will consider studies relating to texture-modified food interventions for older adults in LTC residential facilities with no exclusion based on country, gender, or comorbidities. Intervention that addresses texture-modified foods issue, such as deciding the type of food, preparing, giving, and evaluating the outcomes, are qualified for inclusion. Studies with patients who are not older adults will be excluded. This review will consider the study design for mixed-method quantitative and qualitative.
Methods:
This protocol has been registered in Open Science Framework (registration DOI: 10.17605/OSF.IO/79AFZ). A scoping review using the JBI methodological approach will be performed. A comprehensive search for published literature will be systematically searched: PubMed, CINAHL, MEDLINE, ProQuest, PsycINFO, and SCI (Web of Science). Data screening and extraction will be performed by two reviewers independently. The studies included will be synthesized, summarized, and reported, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. The study finding will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.
