ABSTRACT

Background:

Sleep bruxism (SB) is an oral behavior that is characterized by high levels of repetitive jaw muscle activity and may develop into a disorder. The etiology of SB is not well understood, and there is currently no curative treatment for SB. Several studies have suggested associations between SB and maladaptive emotion regulation (ER).

Objective:

The aim of this study is to test whether ER is impaired in individuals with SB.

Methods:

To more directly probe these associations, this study measured trait and state SB and ER alongside affect and sleep variables. We collected self-reported and physiological data, using individual-difference questionnaires and 14-day ecological momentary and ambulatory assessments. We will test for maladaptive ER in terms of strategy use frequency and effectiveness as a function of SB while controlling for affect and sleep.

Results:

This research received funding in April 2017. Data collection took place from August 2020 to March 2022. 238 participants were eligible and completed the study. Data analysis has not yet started.

Conclusions:

We hope that the effort to thoroughly measure SB and ER using gold-standard methods and cutting-edge technology will advance knowledge of SB as well as more effective interventions through ER to alleviate the pain and distress of those impacted. Clinical Trial: 1R01DE026771-01
