ABSTRACT
Social determinants of health (SDoH) are the conditions in the environment where people are born, live, learn, and work that impact their health, well-being, and quality of life. It is known that they are associated with health disparities and inequities throughout the world (14). To better understand the needs of our community, The University of Kansas Health System (TUKHS) started collecting data in 2016 from a self-administered SDoH survey during patient visits. Using this survey data, the goal of this project was to assess the trends of SDoH before and after the COVID-19 pandemic declaration (March 11, 2020). This study helps to better understand how SDoH have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic in TUKHS’s catchment area. The patient’s post-pandemic responses indicate that some of the government-implemented policies like food assistance programs, and eviction protection may have helped alleviate the SDoH needs across Kansas and western Missouri with a larger impact in Wyandotte County, Kansas specifically.
