Enhancing Patient Engagement with Digital Health Applications
ABSTRACT
The rapid expansion of virtual primary care and its related digital health technologies has been highlighted in a recent editorial. Another area of healthcare that has seen a robust digital transformation is clinical trials in the form of decentralized clinical trials (DCTs). DCTs provide a technology that promises to achieve more representative patient participation, increased geographic reach, improved data quality, better regulatory compliance, and decreased costs. However, the challenge of maintaining patient engagement in clinical research remains a central problem for DCTs, as it is for the successful use of all digital health applications. We propose that foundational knowledge in behavioral and social science may offer solutions for this fundamental and persistent challenge.
