Warning: This is a unreviewed preprint (What is a preprint?). Readers are warned that the document has not been peer-reviewed by expert/patient reviewers or an academic editor, may contain misleading claims, and is likely to undergo changes before final publication, if accepted, or may have been rejected/withdrawn (a note "no longer under consideration" will appear above).

Peer-review me: Readers with interest and expertise are encouraged to sign up as peer-reviewer, if the paper is within an open peer-review period (in this case, a "Peer-Review Me" button to sign up as reviewer is displayed above). Elder Abuse: A Review

  • Anung Ahadi Pradana

ABSTRACT

Background:

The increase in the world's older adults population may increase the risk of elder abuse in this group. Elder abuse is a global problem that is often underestimated even though it can affect social conditions in society which leads to health problems, especially in older adults group.

Objective:

The purpose of this article is to get a complete picture of elder abuse.

Methods:

The method used in this writing is a narrative review on several scientific sources and journal articles published in 2011-2021 from several databases such as Google Scholar, CINAHL, ProQuest, PubMed, and EBSCO.

Results:

In general, elder abuse is divided into 5 types which consist of physical abuse, psychological abuse, financial abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. The assumption that the community has that elder abuse is a private matter in the family often causes the incidence of elder abuse to be underreported in the community.

Conclusions:

Health workers need to maximize their role in screening for risks, health education, and as facilitators of activities that can increase older adults awareness of elder abuse so that this incident is no longer underreported.
