Internal Health Locus of Control and mhealth Adoption:The Mediating Influence of UTAUT
ABSTRACT
Background:
Mobile health or mhealth impacts on the development of the health care system as individuals are able to proactively monitor their health using this technology. Although individuals’ internal health locus of control (HLOC) is associated with the adoption of health-related technologies, little is known about the underlying mechanism of this association.
Objective:
The primary objective of this study was to test the mediation influence of UTAUT on the relationship between internal HLOC and intention to use mhealth.
Methods:
A total of 374 responses were collected from Malaysian adult users of mhealth, using convenience sampling method. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyse the data. Variables collected included demographic variables, internal HLOC and the modified UTAUT constructs.
Results:
The results showed that there was no direct relationship between internal HLOC and behavioural intention to use mhelath. The indirect effect of the relationship between internal HLOC and mhealth was supported, indicating that UTAUT constructs, performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and social influence, mediated this relationship. The results showed full mediation, with total variance explained at 47.2%.
Conclusions:
UTAUT dimensions were central to our understanding of the association between internal HLOC and the intention to adopt mhealth.
