Expectations of Health Researchers from Academic Social Network sites: A Qualitative Study
ABSTRACT
Background:
Today, the role of academic social networks in improving the quality of education and research of researchers has become more critical.
Objective:
This study aimed to investigate the requirements of Iranian researchers as developing countries from academic social networks.
Methods:
This qualitative study with a phenomenological approach was done in 2020. In this study, 23 experts and researchers in the health system were selected by purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data. Data were analyzed by MaxQAD10 software and content analysis method.
Results:
We identified two categories of functional and technical characteristics in the expectations of the study participants. Functional characteristics were included facilitating communication and team activities, managing scientific publications, enhanced the process of conducting research, being informative, sharing, and trading laboratory materials and equipment. They expressed user management capabilities, high security and privacy, user friendly, and other technical features, as technical characteristics of an academic social network.
Conclusions:
Researchers emphasized two functional characteristics of the academic social networks, including the sharing and trading of laboratory materials and equipment and communication with other researchers.
