Visualizing medication information using hierarchical task analysis and infographics in a mobile device

ABSTRACT

Background:

Despite providing patients medication information both in paper and digital format, there has been a critical gap in patient knowledge about crucial medication information. As a result, patients suffer from adverse events from this lack of understanding. We propose that utilizing human factors approaches such as hierarchical task analysis and appropriate information presentation may aid better understanding. Our hypothesis is that innovative mobile applications utilizing human factors and infographics have the potential to improve the patient’s overall knowledge of medication

Objective:

In this paper, we utilized a hierarchical task analysis approach to improve the overall design and demonstrated the feasibility for such design to be translated into interesting infographics

Methods:

We created an innovative digital prototype design for an oral medication in a mobile application platform and conducted usability evaluations of the prototype

Results:

We successfully created a mobile application prototype using hierarchical task analysis and infographics. We reiterated the design based on the specific recommendations from the usability

Conclusions:

The knowledge of medical information may in turn result in better information recall, improved medication adherence and reduced adverse events
