ABSTRACT

The rapid development of genetic and genomic technologies, such as next-generation sequencing and genome editing, makes disease treatment much more precise and effective. This value can only be realized by the aggregation and analysis of people’ genomic and health data. However, there are many problems in the collection and sharing of genomics data, including low data quality, information islands, tampering distortions, missing records, leaking individual privacy, and data gray transactions, to name a few. The state-of-art technology, blockchain, provides an ideal solution to protect and manage personal sensitive genomic data because of its decentralization, traceability, encryption algorithms, and non-tampering features. This paper describes a case of a blockchain-based genomic big data platform — LifeCODE.ai — to illustrate how blockchain enables the storage and management of genomics data from the perspectives of data ownership, data sharing and data security. As one of the first to investigate the application of blockchain technology in healthcare data management, this study makes important contributions to both academics and practice.
