Artificial Intelligence Models for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Heavy Menstrual Bleeding, Iron-Deficiency Anaemia and Diabetes Mellitus in Women of Reproductive Age: A Scoping Review Protocol

  • Grace Komuhangi

ABSTRACT

Background:

Background:

Heavy menstrual bleeding, iron-deficiency anaemia and diabetes mellitus may present together in women of reproductive age. Iron status and inflammation can complicate interpretation of glycaemic and iron biomarkers. The extent to which diagnostic artificial-intelligence models represent this population and these interactions remains insufficiently mapped.

Objective:

Objective:

To map artificial-intelligence models for diagnosis and monitoring of heavy menstrual bleeding, iron-deficiency anaemia and diabetes mellitus, and derive an evidence-traceable clinical requirements specification.

Methods:

Methods:

The review will follow established scoping-review guidance and use population, concept and context eligibility criteria. MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL Complete, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, the Cochrane Library and IEEE Xplore will be searched for English-language evidence from January 1, 2017. Supplementary searching will include regional databases, preprints, clinical guidance and citation networks. Eligible models must address at least one target condition in women or adolescent girls of reproductive age, or provide separable results for that population. Two reviewers will independently screen and chart evidence after calibration. Descriptive synthesis will map clinical tasks, biomarkers, reference standards, performance and validation. Conventional risk-of-bias appraisal and meta-analysis are not planned.

Results:

Results:

The protocol was registered on September 18, 2026. Database searching was underway as of October 12, 2026. The registered anticipated completion date is March 31, 2027. No review findings are reported in this protocol.

Conclusions:

Conclusions:

The review will clarify population relevance, biomarker coverage and validation gaps, informing requirements for integrated diagnostic modelling without implying that reported performance establishes clinical readiness.
