Discussions of Oral Versus Injectable Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists for Weight Loss on Reddit: Content Analysis

  • Yiran Liu

ABSTRACT

Through content analysis of 73,740 posts on glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) from 44 Reddit communities (October 2025-September 2026), we found the share of oral GLP-1 RA discussion rising from 1.2% to 7.6%. Compared with injectable posts, oral posts more frequently discussed medication-use practice (47.4% vs 40.7%) and cash-pay and direct-to-consumer channels (13.7% vs 8.1%), with less attention to diet, psychosocial concerns, appearance, and comorbidities. These findings suggest oral GLP-1 RAs are framed as consumer goods for self-acquisition and self-management rather than as medical interventions embedded in the body like injectables, a framing that might lower treatment barriers while weakening recognition of obesity as a chronic disease requiring medical management and increasing risks of nonstandard use.
