Designing for Reality: Lessons in Integrated Ecological Momentary Assessment and Wearable Data Collection
ABSTRACT
Smartphones and wearable devices such as smartwatches are creating exciting new opportunities to understand people’s health, physical activity, and well-being in their everyday lives. However, combining these technologies in research is often much more complicated than it appears, requiring researchers to manage participant engagement, changing technologies, and large amounts of data over long periods. This commentary highlights these practical challenges and provides recommendations to help researchers design studies that are more reliable, feasible, and capable of producing meaningful real-world evidence.
