Association between an AI-decision support tool and physician outcomes

ABSTRACT

The prevalence of clinician burnout is a growing concern among health systems, and there has been an increase in the implementation of strategies to improve physician outcomes. In particular, AI-enabled clinical decision support tools may have the potential to improve physician well-being and reduce burnout but this has not been heavily explored. The purpose of our study is to assess the association between MedPearl, an EHR-integrated clinician decision support tool, and well-being and burnout outcomes among physicians in a large integrated health system. Among 2,696 clinicians who participated in a clinician experience survey, we examined the relationship between their responses on the wellbeing and burnout domains and MedPearl use. Our findings showed that MedPearl use was associated with perceived control over work and organizational fairness, but we observed variations by sex and specialty type subgroups.
