ABSTRACT
Background:
The Facility for Elderly Surveillance System (FESSy) has been expected to improve information collection even after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, potential association between institutional enthusiasm for data entry to FESSy and outbreak size has not been evaluated.
Objective:
This study examines direct effects of FESSy on outbreak size at facilities.
Methods:
We regressed the outbreak size and the ultimate number of patients on the data entry rate. An outbreak was defined as an event with more than 10 patients. The study period was June 1, 2023 through January, 2026. Entry rate was defined as proportion of days in which facility entered data to FESSy during 30 days until 30 days before outbreak.
Results:
We found that higher data entry rates to FESSy were associated with significantly reduced outbreak size.
Conclusions:
The findings suggest that higher FESSy data entry rates reduce COVID-19 outbreak sizes at facilities. Further investigation of this relation should be necessary to check its robustness.
