Patient Experiences with Outpatient Pharmacy Services in Hospitals Using Automated Pharmacy Systems: A Cross-Sectional Study
ABSTRACT
Background:
Advancement in health technology and the adoption of electronic systems into hospital pharmacies has transformed the nature of their practice and services, promising numerous benefits in improving patient care and safety. Therefore, it is of paramount importance to seek patients’ opinions and understand their satisfaction level with electronic prescribing and dispensing systems.
Objective:
This study aimed to evaluate the impact of automated pharmacy services from patients' perspectives.
Methods:
A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online questionnaire to identify patient satisfaction towards electronic pharmacy services in the outpatient pharmacies of government hospitals in Kuwait.
Results:
It was shown that almost 95% (393/416) of the participants either agreed or strongly agreed that they were totally satisfied with the delivered services through the automated pharmacy systems. Participants reported the perceived benefits of pharmacy services, including time savings (356/416, 85.6%), prevention of medication errors (211/416, 50.7%), and easy access to prescription information at any time (249/416, 59.9%).
Conclusions:
The implementation of automated pharmacy systems has improved patient services by enhancing the medication collection experience and overall quality of care.
