ABSTRACT

Background:

Self-management has been shown to mitigate the negative effects of asthma. Technical solutions might support self-management for patients with chronic diseases.

Objective:

To investigate patients' and healthcare professionals' experiences of using a digital self-management system for asthma.

Methods:

This qualitative study was conducted at five primary care centers in Sweden and involved 20 participants: 14 patients who had utilized the digital self-management system for at least six months, and six specialist asthma nurses. Individual interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.

Results:

We identified one main theme: “Data-supported empowerment” and three subthemes: (1) Empowerment by awareness, knowledge, and learning, (2) Contact healthcare-patient, and (3) Managing the monitoring.

Conclusions:

The digital self-management system for asthma was well received by both patients and healthcare professionals, as it promoted empowerment. Clinical Trial: Not required.
