ABSTRACT
Background:
Black youth experience higher rates of interpersonal and racial trauma than other youth, but they are less likely to utilize and benefit from mental health services. Incorporating experiences of Black youth by incorporating culturally specific strategies in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) may address this disparity.
Objective:
Using the ADAPT-ITT Model, racial socialization was integrated into TF-CBT.
Methods:
Interviews were conducted with experts in racial trauma and socialization, and with ten Black caregivers and twelve Black youth (aged 12-18) who had previously engaged in TF-CBT. Focus groups consisting of fifteen clinicians trained in TF-CBT and providing services to Black youth and their caregivers were also conducted.
Results:
Results of a Learning Community to train clinicians and test the integrated treatment (TF-CBT-RS) suggest increased clinician efficacy, treatment engagement and utilization, and client perceptions of support.
Conclusions:
We conclude with a discussion of suggestions for the use of a recently published treatment manual-based application of TF-CBT.
