ABSTRACT

Background:

Rising rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among adolescents and young adults (AYA) are concerning. Emergency department (ED) visits offer a unique opportunity to increase STI testing. Developed through a multi-stakeholder, iterative process, STIckER (STI Check in the ER) is a digital patient decision aid that facilitates shared decision-making for AYA regarding urinary, oral, and rectal gonorrhea and chlamydia testing.

Objective:

The STIckER trial aims to assess implementation outcomes and the potential efficacy of the STIckER web-based app in increasing STI testing among AYA ED patients in one adult and one pediatric emergency department.

Methods:

In this pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT), we consented and enrolled sexually active AYA English-speaking ED patients aged 14-24. Patients will be randomized to usual care (control) arm or the STIckER app (intervention) at the healthcare provider (HCP) level. Patients and their HCPs will complete post-visit questionnaires after each visit; HCPs will complete a final questionnaire upon completion of the study. Data regarding STI testing and results will be pulled from the electronic medical record.

Results:

Participant recruitment ended in June 2024, and the study is expected to be completed by winter 2024.

Conclusions:

This trial will determine if the STIckER app is feasible in the ED, is acceptable to ED AYA patients and their HCPs, demonstrates fidelity, and shows preliminary efficacy in increasing STI testing among AYA ED patients. Clinical Trial: ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT06014177
