ABSTRACT

Background:

With hypertension emerging as a global public health concern, taking measures to reduce its burden is urgent. The hypertension management program in China is standardized policy to help people with hypertension to enhance their health levels and reduce health inequalities. However, studies focusing on participance details of this program remain scarce.

Objective:

This study aims to investigate the participation rates in hypertension management programs in China and examine the health disparities in hypertension management between immigrant and native populations in Shenzhen.This study aims to investigate the participation rates in hypertension management programs in China and examine the health disparities in hypertension management between immigrant and native populations in Shenzhen.

Methods:

Based on the medical record of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China. We included adults with new-onset diagnosis of hypertension after 2017 and focus on patients who have record in Community Healthcare Center. We described the basic character of people diagnosed with hypertension, including age, gender, marital status, occupation, education level and health insurance type. Enrolled Rate, Follow-up Rate and Adherent Rate were used to measure the engagement of this program from city-level, district-level and community-level.

Results:

Of the 1,160,214 hypertensive patients (29.7% native population, 70.3% migrant population), of whom 55.38% (642,250)were enrolled in the HMP. 57.52% (48,848) of those followed up, and 62.59% (34,186) of those adherents. The migrant population demonstrates a significantly higher participation in HMP, especially in Enrolled Rate (45.30% in native population, 59.60% in immigrant) and Adherent Rate (52.04% in native population, 65.72% in immigrant). Apart from that, native, younger, and single showed lower rate compared to their counterparts. There also exists within-district and within-community variation among enrolled, follow up and adherent rate.

Conclusions:

Based on the research, population with different demographic, socioeconomic characteristics and in different regions showed different rates. Given these findings, there is a potential to enhance the outreach and engagement of native, younger, and single populations through targeted promotional strategies.
