Long-term monitoring of individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease using digital health technology: a qualitative study

ABSTRACT

Background:

Digital health (DH) adoption in clinical practice has been widespread, yet there remains untapped potential for optimizing care in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study conducted qualitative research involving 35 healthcare providers (HCPs) from diverse hospitals in Taiwan.

Objective:

The objective of this study was to investigate the barriers and facilitators related to the implementation of digital health technology (DHT) in the Long-Term Monitoring of Individuals With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)based on clinical experiences in Taiwan. By analyzing the perspectives of Taiwanese healthcare professionals, this research aims to provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with utilizing digital health technology (DHT) for the management and enhancement of respiratory rehabilitation and long-term monitoring of health in COPD patients in Taiwan.

Methods:

The findings of this study offer valuable insights that can guide the future development of user-friendly clinical support tools within COPD digital healthcare systems. Several key themes were identified as both barriers and facilitators to the development of DHT. Barriers encompassed concerns pertaining to digital safety, insurance coverage, constraints related to medical resources, and the presence of a digital divide. Conversely, facilitators encompassed the advantages of DHT, including the potential for cost reduction, personalized prescribing, and the motivation it instills in users.

Results:

To significantly enhance the acceptance and utilization of DHT among users, it is recommended to embrace a user-centered approach that prioritizes the distinct needs of various stakeholders. This approach holds the potential to optimize the implementation of DHT. Moreover, leveraging the effective utilization of DHT in managing the health of individuals with COPD promises to deliver care characterized by heightened precision and efficiency.

Conclusions:

Overall, using digital health technology (DHT) for the long-term care of COPD patients offers more benefits than drawbacks. These valuable insights provide meaningful recommendations for future research endeavors and practical implementation within the field. By addressing the identified barriers and capitalizing on the facilitators, advancements can be made in the development and utilization of DHT, ultimately leading to improved COPD care outcomes.
